Fake Clinics & COVID-19: Follow the Money
AS UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS ARE SLASHED AND LEGIT BUSINESSES ARE DENIED GOVERNMENT HELP, FAKE CLINICS HAVE BEEN GRANTED MILLIONS in COVID BAILOUT CASH TO CONTINUE THEIR HARMFUL, ANTI-ABORTION MANIPULATION OF VULNERABLE PREGNANT PEOPLE
The Guardian reports that fake clinics have received at least $4 million and possibly even more than $10 million in forgivable federal loans from the paycheck protection program in the first COVID bailout package. Fake clinic networks Heartbeat International and Obria were both recipients of this aid, on top of the millions also given to anti-gay and anti-abortion lobbying groups in the same program, while actual healthcare provider Planned Parenthood was forced to give back $60 million because of the Title X “gag rule” implemented in 2019.
Heartbeat International, which notably manages the national “Abortion Pill Reversal” hotline, and Obria, which also receives federal Title X funding for its California locations, offer little in the way of actual services for pregnant people. What they do provide is medically inaccurate information and manipulative messaging designed entirely to be a barrier to people seeking abortion care and the full spectrum of reproductive health services. Fake clinics should NOT be getting funding during a massive economic and healthcare emergency!
